For this Sur Ron Light Bee X review, we have also taken tips and advice from Sur Ron mechanics, and Sur Ron dealers, and sourced information directly from the manufacturer for a more thorough review of the Sur Ron X.

Sur-Ron X Light Bee Review

For this Sur Ron Light Bee X review, let’s start with what a Sur Ron Light Bee X is and clear up some name issues? The Sur Ron Light Bee X is also known as just the Sur Ron or more commonly called the Sur Ron X.

I personally think “Light Bee” sounds lame which is why I call it the Sur Ron X most of the time.

So What Is A Sur Ron Light Bee X? The Sur Ron Light Bee X is a hybrid electric dirt bike combined with an electric mountain bike. The Sur Ron X is about the size of a typical mountain bike, it uses mountain bike tires, mountain bike front and rear suspension, and has mountain bike handlebars.

The Sur Ron X can even be fitted with a peddle kit which is sometimes done just to make it street legal in some areas. Even with all these mountain bike parts, the Sur Ron Light Bee X looks like a dirt bike with a dirt bike seat, a dirt bike frame, dirt bike brakes, and it’s equipped with dirt bike power.

Most riders would consider the Sur Ron X a small dirt bike similar to the size of a 125cc or 150cc dirt bike. However, with some upgrades, it is possible to make the Sur Ron bigger so it looks and feels more like a 250cc dirt bike.

At about 110 lbs, the Sur Ron X is lighter than a typical gas dirt bike but it’s about twice as heavy as most electric mountain bikes.

In some areas, the Sur Ron X might be street legal with the peddle kit on the bike and with the power limiter left intact. It could be considered, while in other areas it would be classified as similar to a motorbike and therefore not street legal.

Speed: Two Speed And Power Modes

Sur Ron Light Bee X review on the speed is that overall most riders feel that the pickup and top-end speed is very good.

There are some Sur Ron Light Bee X reviews where they list different top-end speeds and I think this is because some of these reviews are either old or because the Sur Ron Official website does not list the speed. I think the reason for this is that the speed of the Sur Ron is limited by a governor for legal purposes.

However, I have seen many riders and expert speed tests done on the Sur Ron X so we will provide an average maximum speed.

The 2022 Sur Ron X is an electric dirt bike with the ability to reach a top speed of 47 miles per hour or 75kph with no upgrades, and it comes equipped with two modes for different types of riding and for power-saving purposes.

Note: The Sur Ron bike also comes equipped with a limiter /governor apparently for legal reasons. This limiter is active straight out of the box and limits the top speed to about 32mph/49kph in sport mode and 28mph in EP Mode. You can deactivate this limiter for full power.

With upgrades and modifications, some riders claim they are getting their Sur Ron Light Bee X bike to around 85 miles per hour. We discuss how riders are achieving such fast speeds as well as how to disable the limiter/governor so you can get maximum speed out of your bike in our article, How To Make A Surron Go Faster: What The Experts Do?

EP or Eco Mode limits battery usage or power output and this provides prolonged range but it drops the maximum speed to about 15mph / 24kph. The Eco Mode speed restriction also makes the Sur Ron X bike legal to ride in some areas where electric bikes are permitted.

Then there is the Sur Ron X’s Sport Mode which is also known as SP Mode. Sport Mode allows more power from the battery which will increase low-end torque and will increase top speeds up to 47mph with the limiter disabled. Unless you are commuting and require the extra range, most riders will be in Sport Mode.

However, riders of the Sur Ron X will claim different top-end speeds for their bikes but these differences can often be attributed to the rider’s weight and size, as well as the type of terrain the bike is being used on and a few other factors.

Sur Ron Light Bee X Review Speed rating 8 out of 10

The overall rider consensus is that the speed of the Sur Ron Light Bee X is good on the trails, good when off-road riding, and good on the streets once the governor is deactivated.

The top speed of 47mph is suitable for most average riders and since the Sur Ron X can reach speeds of over 80mph with upgrades and mods, the overall speed score is 8 out of 10.

Sur Ron Range And Ride Time

The Sur Ron Light Bee X review on the range and ride time is provided by actual riders and most say that the range is decent for an electric bike but it could be better. Since the range is important on any electric vehicle and is sometimes the deciding factor for buyers it is good to know what to expect.

The Sur Ron has an advertised maximum range of 60 miles at 20mph or 100km at 32kph when in Eco Mode, however, do not expect to get this type of range with trail riding.

The truth is that although the Sur Ron X has a decent advertised range for an electric dirt bike, actual rider range tests show different results.

Based on multiple rider range tests you can expect to get between 30 and 40 miles of range with an average speed of around 20mph when riding off-road. This gives you an average ride time of about 190 minutes. Results will vary.

The true range and ride time of the Surron Light Bee X will be determined by what mode you are in, your riding style which means how hard you ride the bike, the terrain that you ride it on, how heavy you are, your tires and tire pressure, air temperature, as well as any upgrades you have made.

As an example, a rider on the trail going up a lot of hills or a long mountain climb or a rider that has the throttle pinned in Sport Mode will use more battery power, and therefore there will be less range and less ride time.

A rider on city streets cruising at a low speed of 20mph will use less power and therefore get more range and ride time.

The range will also depend on how heavy the rider is since the battery and motor will need to work harder for a heavier rider.

Riding in near-freezing temperatures drains the battery faster and your range could be almost half of what it would be in the summer.

Upgrades to your sprocket and your battery will also have varying effects on your range and ride time. You can see more at Sur Ron Sprockets, Speed, Upgrades, And More

Sur Ron Battery Condition: Another factor in the speed, power, and range of the Sur Ron X is the condition of your battery. The Sur Ron battery is supposed to take 500 cycles before it very gradually becomes less powerful and less efficient. You should be able to get 1000 cycle charges out of a Sur Ron battery. If you are between 500 and 1000 cycles you may find that your speed, power, and range will become less with each charge.

Battery

The speed, power, and range that you get on your Sur Ron X are all a result of the massive 60 volt 32Amp Lithium Battery with 176 Panasonic Cells which charge to full in about 3 – 3.5 hours.

Your battery will get 500 charges before it starts losing some of its range but you should get about 100 cycles before you will need to replace the battery.

It is highly recommended to take your Sur Ron battery maintenance and storage seriously since we have heard guys lose almost 50 percent range long before their 500th cycle. This loss in range was due to improper care or storage of their battery which sucks because it’s about $1500.00 to replace the battery and this could have been prevented. To learn how to make your Sur Ron battery last longer and for proper storage see our article Sur Ron Battery Care: Proper Charging And Storage For Longevity.

You can replace or upgrade your battery for more range and power. To learn more check out: Sur Ron Battery Replacement and Upgrades

NOTE: The Sur Ron will turn itself off when the battery gets too low. We have hard riders say their Sur Ron still went another a mile or two at zero percent battery and other riders say their Sur Ron shut off around 6% battery life. Keep this in mind when riding far from your house or vehicle.

range rating 500x min

The overall rider consensus is that the range of the Sur Ron Light Bee X is decent on the trails, good when off-road riding, and best on the streets.

If you are happy with 90 minutes of ride time on the trails or off-road and a range of 30 to 40 miles then the Sur Ron is a good choice.

Weight Of The Sur-Ron X: A Positive Advantage

The Sur Ron X is possibly the lightest electric dirt bike on the market with an out-of-the-box weight of only 110 pounds, 50 kilograms which is about half the weight of a 250cc dirt bike. This weight includes the battery.

The is a great bike for teens and adults due to its size and weight and most riders make the claim that the bike is very agile on the trails and easy to manage for smaller riders.

The Sur-Run is agile and the power to weight ratio is amazing which allows riders to easily maneuver the bike and ride in tight trails that might be difficult to do with a full-size gas dirt bike that weighs twice as much.

However, when riding very bumpy terrain and on rocks, some riders say that the lightness of the bike feels more like a mountain bike and you may get tossed around more than you would on a heavier full-size dirt bike.

Handling And Rider Experience

Sur Ron X review of the handling and rider experience is surprisingly good. Handling and rider experience go hand in hand with the lightness, power, wheels, and suspension of the Sur Ron X.

Most riders love the acceleration and speed of the bike and are impressed with how well the Sur Ron X handles in the dirt and sand both on the trails and on the track.

When comparing the Sur Ron to a dirt bike of similar size or bigger the Sur Ron has a fast hole shot but likely won’t be as fast on the straight away after any distance.  However, the Sur Ron will keep up or hold its own on the tighter trails since it is a lot more agile and lightweight.

Riders are now racing the Sur Ron on the trails and the tracks and they are able to go head to head with gas-powered dirt bikes on speed and handling when they upgrade the battery and controller.

The overall ride experience is good which is also due to the brakes and suspension which I will discuss below.

Suspension

Sur Ron Light Bee X review on the front and rear suspension is that overall most riders feel that the suspension is good, however, depending on your riding style and if you do jumps you will want to eventually upgrade the front suspension.

With a full front and rear suspension that is meant for the trails and with the stock 19-inch dirt bike wheels, the average rider will enjoy the mountain bike suspension that comes on the latest Sur Ron X.

As of this time, the Sur Ron comes with either the DNM Volcano front and rear suspension or the KKE front and rear suspension. Both are adjustable for preload and rebound.

Serious riders recommend upgrading the front suspension as soon as possible with many riders bottoming out the front shocks. For more information on shocks, modifications, or upgrades check out Sur Ron Shocks, Maintenance, Upgrades, And Modifications

Brakes

Sur Ron X review on the brakes is that overall most riders feel that they are good however some riders suggest you may want to upgrade.

Your average rider will be impressed with how fast the Sur Ron slows down thanks to its front and rear piston hydraulic disc brakes and overall these brakes are very good.

With the new 2022 brake upgrades to the 4-piston, titanium-finished calipers with sintered pads for improved heat dissipation and braking power, we are waiting to hear from multiple riders how much better these brakes actually are.

However, serious riders that speed through trails, or downhill, or race the Sur Ron X on the track recommend upgrading the brake pads as soon as possible because they say at high speeds the breaks are not great which can be dangerous.

The Sur Ron also has regenerative braking which will slow you down using the motor while putting power back into the battery. The higher the regen mode you are in the faster it will slow down.

Wheels

Sur Ron Light Bee X review on the wheels is that overall most riders feel that they are very good. Most average riders are happy with the 19 x 1.4 wire-spoke wheels with alloy hubs on the Front and Rear.

The tire is an aggressive knob mountain bike tire that provides good performance and handling on the trails and decent performance on the pavement.

The downside to these tires is they are relatively thin for a motorized vehicle with this much power and their grip on the hills and in the mud is not great.

Many trail riders will eventually upgrade the front tire to a 21″ which provides better performance and allows the bike to roll over logs and rocks easier. Trail rider will also upgrade the rear tire to a more aggressive tread and a wider tire for more traction. To learn more: check out Sur Ron Tires: Maintenance, Replacement, And Upgrades

Electronics: Display Speedometer

Sur Ron X review on the display speedometer is that overall most riders feel that it is decent but could be better when compared to Sur Ron’s direct competition the Talaria Sting and the Segway X260, which both have better displays with more options.

All we can say about the display speedometer on the Sur Ron is that it’s an LED digital Speedometer with an odometer.

While the competition allows you to set regen and EP and SP on the display, on the Sur Ron you can change the modes using a toggle switch beside the display.

Dimensions And Specs Of The Sur Ron Light Bee X

I put my bike in the back of a Ford Explorer SUV with the seats down and it fits just fine. This bike will fit in the back of bigger SUVs with the seats down, and it should easily fit in the back of most pickup trucks. It will also fit on a standard motorcycle hitch rack.

  • The length from tire to tire is 6 feet 1.6 inches / 187cm
  • The seat height at its the lowest point is 33 inches / 84cm
  • The seat height at its highest point is 34.6inches or / 88cm

Specs: The Sur Ron X has an exposed aluminum frame with no body panels it has a 40 in height to the tops of the handlebars.

Battery: The battery is a large 60 volt 32 amp pack that puts out a peak of 7,000 watts of power. The battery is removable and is housed in the middle of the bike in a locked compartment and weighs about 20 pounds. Riders that race them can easily and quickly swap out the battery.

Motor: The 15-pound air-cooled electric motor is a direct drive with a chain and large sprocket which helps create 18 ft pounds of torque. There are no gears so the motor is a single-speed powertrain with the power and torque similar to a 125cc gas dirt bike.

Controller: The new X Version Sine Wave Controller determines battery output in both Eco and Sport Mode.

Updates to the latest 2022 models include:

Assembly Of The Sur-Ron X Light Bee

Most riders are buying their bikes online but there are more and more bike shops across North America that are now selling the bikes. The bike is shipped in a box and when purchased and picked up at the dealer most of the time the Sur Ron is also in a box, which means there is some assembly required. The good thing is the assembly of the Sur Ron is fairly easy.

For the average guy (non-mechanic) it will take about 30 to 60 minutes to assemble the bike and most people find the setup to be very straightforward.

However, some bike shops will pre-build the bike for you but you might need to pay a little extra.

Watch the video to see how to build the Sur Ron.

Box Dimensions: If you plan to pick your Sur Ron up from a local shop these are the box dimensions.

  • Sur Ron Box Dimensions – 65″ long x 33″ High x 12″ wide ( 165cm x 83.82cm x 30.53cm ) (1650 mm x 850 mm x 310 mm)
  • The full box weight is 154lbs (70kg)

Once built, the Sur-Ron X also fits nicely on the back of a vehicle using something like the Black Widow Hitch-Mounted Aluminum Motorcycle Carrier.

No Fluids, No Oil Changes, Less Maintenance

The Sur Ron X light Bee is the most affordable replacement for a gas dirt bike and for many riders, this can be better than owning a traditional dirt bike since it does not need any gas or oil and is nearly maintenance-free.

Having no oil or gas means that the Sur Ron X is 100% emissions-free. The Sur Ron has no internal gears or gearcase that requires oil which means that it requires no regular or time-consuming or expensive oil changes or other maintenance requirements that a gas bike would.

The Sur Ron X requires very little maintenance overall, and with fewer parts, it has less chance of it breaking down. Less maintenance and fewer repairs make this bike even more economical.

To keep your Sur Ron X bike in perfect riding condition and to ensure safety, there are some things that we know riders are doing to prevent any issues and you should too. Find out what issues and problems riders are having and the preventative measures and the fixes on our page Sur Ron Maintenance: Preventative Maintenance And Daily Safety Checks.

Sur Ron Is Quite: Ride More Places

A major advantage of an electric bike is that it is quiet.

Aside from a little bit of noise from the chain, the electric motor, and maybe from the belt, the Sur Ron X is a very quiet bike and it’s not much noisier than a typical mountain bike.

This gives riders the advantage of riding it in a lot of places a loud gas-powered dirt bike can’t go. I have, and I have seen other riders riding on hiking paths, bike trails, sidewalks, on the street, near or through subdivisions, and even past the cops with no issues. You can really keep a low profile on the Sur Ron when you need to.

I ride my SurRon for 5 minutes through residential streets and on some park walking paths before I get to my favorite trails and nobody seems to care. This is a major advantage over a gas dirt bike and one of the reasons I chose a Sur Ron over a gas dirt bike.

Most people that would normally be angry with a loud dirt bike on the trails are friendly and very curious when they see someone on a Sur Ron, as long as you’re not speeding past them and tearing up the trails.

Respect for the trails and the people using them is always the better way to go.

Rider Size:

The question of rider size is asked a lot and I have not seen it answered well in any Sur Ron Light Bee X review yet. So we found out what actual riders of all sizes are saying about their experience riding the Sur Ron X.

Rider Weight

The maximum load or rider weight is 220 pounds or 100kgs as suggested by the Sur Ron manufacturer. However, we have heard from riders over 280 pounds that say they have no problems riding their Sur Ron X bikes.

We are not telling you to exceed the maximum capacity, we are saying it is being done. Exceeding the maximum capacity may void your warranty and put you at risk of injury or death.

If you ride hard on the trails and are over the 220-pound limit you may require a front and rear suspension upgrade.

Rider Height

One of the downsides to the Sur Ron X is that it is not made for tall guys over 6 feet. It fits most riders from 5 feet o to 5’11 perfectly but riders of 6 feet or more might find it too small.

With that being said I am 6’2 and I think that it is still ok for a guy my size, and I know riders of 6’3 that also ride it without any problems, however, most riders over 6 feet will eventually make some modifications to the Sur Ron to increase the height of the bike.

With a seat riser modification and a riser handlebar, taller riders will find it much more comfortable.

Sur Ron Upgrades

One great thing about the Sur Ron is that it has been around for about 4 years and now there are lots of upgrade parts, and modifications, and advice for just about every part of the Sur Ron bike so you can make it a perfect fit for you and the type of riding that you do.

This site is a great place for you to get all the information on everything from replacing stock parts, to upgrades, and to help you determine which parts are compatible, as well as tips and modifications to make your Sur Ron better.

  • Limited range and riding time, at about 20 miles of easy riding on the trails and about 90-120 minutes on the trail if ridden at slow speeds
  • The frame is pretty small for riders over 6 feet, however, I know riders up to 6’3 riding it ( can also be modified with wheels size and seat height to fit a 6’3″ rider.
